Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple

Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu

Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu. A very very old temple of immense importance near Bangalore.

Friends, if I tell you about a temple which is said to exist from the times of Dwapar Yuga, won’t you be interested? Well let me take you there today.

The temple I am talking about is Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Shoolagiri which is right on the national highway connecting Bangalre – Hosur – Salem.

The temple we are talking about today, Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, is an ancient Vishnu temple. Located at the foothills of shoolgiri hills, this temple is said to exist from Dwapar Yuga.

Varadaraja Perumal Temple History

The temple history dates back to Mahabharata times ( which was in Dwapar Yuga).

The legend is that the Pandavas lost their kingdom to Duryodhan in the game of gambling and as per the terms set during the game, they were supposed to spent their time in exile. Most of us are quite aware of this incident of Mahabharata.

It is said that during their exile they wandered at many places and also came to shoolgiri. It is said that when they were here, Arjuna established this temple and worshipped Lord Vishnu.

This temple is called as ‘Dakshina Vaikuntam Hasthashyla Sree Kshethram’ (Vaikunatam of the South).

Here Lord Vishnu is know as Sri Varadaraja Perumal.

What is unique about Varadaraja Perumal Temple?

Being associated to Mahabharat times, this itself makes this temple a must visit, but few more important points to note is that

  • Lord faces west in this temple
  • Goddess Mahalakshmi faces east in a separate sanctum
  • During Utharanyana period (mid jan to mid july), the sunrays falls on the feet of Lord Varadaraja Perumal during sunset.

Varadaraja Perumal Temple Timings

Please note that temple is open from 6.00 AM to 11.00 AM in morning time and 5.00 PM to 8.00 PM in evenings.

How to reach Varadaraja Perumal Temple Shoolgiri

The route is pretty straight forward.

  • Bangalore = > Hosur => Shoolgiri
  • Just 1.2 kms from National Highway 48
  • Take the service road at the next left after crossing shoolgiri board
  • Food options – lots on the way.

Please note that once you enter the village, the road is called as dam road, after around 1 kms , you will see a small road going in. The google map will ask you to turn right. But since there is no concrete road, we tend to get confused and miss that. If you miss this turn, then google will re-roue to another 2 kms. So please keep a note of this.

Alternatively you can take a bus from Bangalore or Hosur to reach Shoolgiri and then take an auto.

Conclusion

Overall , this is a temple worth visiting.

We were thrilled to visit a temple which is said to be associated to the great Arjuna and Pandavas.

However I was sad to see that the temple is not well maintained.

The approach to the temple is narrow and during festivals or special occasions parking can be an issue.

This is avery famous Vishnu temple as I mentioned before temple is also called as ‘Dakshina Vaikuntam.”

There are 2 more temples near by. Called as Kashi Vishwanath temple and Ayyappa Swamy temple.

You can also visit these temple during your visit.

Legend behind shri Kodandarama Temple

As per local legend , Lord Rama subdued  bhagwan Parshuram at this place of Hiremaglur.

Brief History of Konark Sun Temple

The construction of this magnificent temple was ordered by Narsimha deva 1, one of the rulers from the eastern Ganga dynasty.

It was built to commemorate his victory over Tughral Tughan Khan in the 1255 CE. It is believed that there were magnets on top of the temple which used to interfere with the magnetic compasses of the sailors.

This used to lead to shipwrecks. The wheels built in the temple are actually sundials that tell time accurately to date.

The temple was commonly known as the black pagoda due to its colour. The temple we see today is just the entrance of the original temple, the rest is believed to have fallen with time.

There had been the destruction of the temple at the time of invasion by the Muslim invader Kala Pahad in the year 1568.

The architecture of the sun temple

The basic design of the temple is in the traditional Kalinga style. The temple is in the shape of a large chariot of the sun god.

There are 12 beautifully engraved pillars and 7 horses. The temple is east slanted so that the first rays of the morning sun shines right upon the main entrance. On the entrance, there are two huge lion structures that seem to be crushing a man and an elephant.

Monsters, animals, beasts, and warriors have been carved out on the walls. There is a similarity of the structures and carvings with those of the Khajuraho temple.

The main sanctum was 70 meters tall, but it fell in the year 1837 due to the weak soil. There is a surviving structure of a 30-meter-high hall.

The temple was originally right on the seashore but there is a considerable distance from the sea now as the sea has changed course.

There are a few more temples in the complex. They are believed to be the Navagraha temple, one of Lord Vishnu and another for the wife of Sun God.

Legend Behind Konark Sun temple

Why Sun God is not worshipped in the Konark temple?

There is a legend according to which when the temple was about to be completed the ruler had ordered a deadline to finish it. Failing which all the 1200 workers would have been beheaded.

The whole structure was ready but there was difficulty in installing the main idol due to the placement of magnets.

Dhramapada the son of the ruler came forward and solved the problem. But the ruler would kill the workers now as well if he came to know that the small boy was able to solve the problem while all the artisans were struggling for a solution.

So, he killed himself to save the lives of all the 1200 workers. But this death made the whole temple impure.

As a result, no worship is done. A myth also says that the young boy was an avatar of Lord Sun to destroy the big ego of the King which he had grown for the construction of this temple.

Rameshwaram temple – Jyotirlinga – Char Dham Yatra

We have covered articles on Char Dham yatra temples and today we will take you to the temple located at Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu – Shri Rameshwaram temple also called as  Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple.

This temple is in Tamil Nadu. Devotees from the whole world throng the temple. It has great significance in the Hindu religion.

The followers of Hinduism wish to visit the temple at least once in their life. It is counted among the pious Char Dham Yatra pilgrims.

Shri Rameshwaram temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The architecture is mesmerizing. It has one of the most famous Jyotirlinga temples of India.

The corridors are the longest in the world known for a temple. The carvings on the pillars are not seen anywhere else in the whole world.

The Lingam is believed to have been placed there by Lord Rama. But the temple has been renovated by several different rulers, so there is an amalgamation of different cultures in the design.

Shri Rameshwaram temple history:

It has a very interesting story associated with the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple . A belief says that once Lord Rama had killed Ravana he was returning back to Ayodhya with Ma Sita.

But he was overtaken by guilt. He wanted to remove the guilt or the Dosha of having killed so many brahmins. So, the sages with him advised him to install and worship a shiva lingam.

He is the one who can forgive their sins. He wished for the largest lingam to be brought from the Himalayas. This was done by hanuman. But all this took a lot of time. So, in the meanwhile, Ma Sita made a small Shiva lingam out of the sand.

The lingam brought by Hanuman was the bigger one. It was placed beside the smaller one. The larger one is called Shiva lingam while the shorter one is called Rama lingam.

The original temple was just a shed made of straw. But later rulers of the Setupati dynasty built massive structures around the main shrine.

The world-famous corridors were the idea of Muthuramalinga. It is called the Chokkatan Mandapam. Architecture is so special that students from all over the world come to study design.

The intricate carving on the pillars is so profound. It is a beautiful and magical sight. The placement of these pillars is such that you can see the corners of the corridor can be seen from any end. The pillars have been placed with precision.

The architecture of the Rameshwaram temple:

The temple is very famous for its architecture all over the world. like all the other south Indian temples it also has high boundary walls and great main gate structures.

The area is so large that it covers 865 feet east to west and 675 feet from north to south. The famous corridors run on a five feet high platform.

The corridors are built using sandstone pillars and ceilings. The total area covered by the corridors is 3850 feet, it is known to be the longest in the whole world. there are 1212 pillars in the outer corridor only.

Rameshwaram temple Rajagopuram

The prominent tower in the center is called the Rajagopuram, it stands 53 meters high. The main halls have been given different names like Sukravara Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam, Anuppu Mandapam, Setupati Mandapam, and Nandi mandapam.

There are two lingams in the temple, unlike any other temple. The first one is a smaller one believed to have been built by Ma Sita herself.

The second one is the larger one brought by Hanuman from Kailash. There are also 22 holy water tirthas in the temple, these are small water bodies.

The devotees take a bath in the water from all of these to get rid of their sins. Interestingly the water from all of these has a different taste. The main one is called Agni Teertham.

You must prefer to go in the winter season. The best time is to go on the occasion of Mahashivratri. The men are expected to wear a dhoti while women must wear a saree.

The temple is known as Jagat Mandir. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna and was made by his great-grandson Vajra Nabha.

He had built it over the land that was reclaimed from the sea. The architecture is based on the Chalukya style.

The city has been dated to the days of Mahabharata. The temple is five-storied and made of limestone and sand only.

There are intricate sculptures and the fineness of the artisans can be seen. The main idol of Lord Krishna is made of black stone.

In the temple complex, there are other shrines as well. These are dedicated to Subhadra, Vasudeva, Rukmini, and Balarama among many others. as a ritual, the devotees take a dip in the holy Gomti river before they enter the temple.

The Janmashtami festival is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. At this time millions of devotees throng the temple on the same day.

There are prayers and rituals the whole day. The shrine can be considered as a hive of voices, colors, and faith all intertwining to give a surreal experience.

Shri Dwarikadhish Temple History:

The story behind the temple is very interesting. The temple is believed to be built by Vajra Nabha the grandson of Lord Krishna.

The name has been fondly kept as Dwarikadhish meaning the lord of Dwarka. The prestigious temple is among the four main pilgrims in the Char Dham yatra.

The temple is also among the 108 Divya Desam related to Lord Vishnu that has been mentioned in the old texts such as Divya Prabhanda.

The legend related to the Idol of lord Dwarikadhish:

  • The first idol of the temple is believed to have been offered prayers by Rukmini herself. It was removed to save from the hands of the invaders.
  • The second one was placed there. A devotee by the name of Badana visited the temple on daily basis. She was so pure in her devotion that Lord Dwarikadhish was pleased with her. He allowed her to take the idol to Dakor, her place. The priest obstructed her way. But she offered to pay the weight of the idol with an equal weight of gold. Lord Krishna showed a miracle and the whole idol was just equal to a small ring. So she had to give away only a small ring of gold.
  • The idol now we see was found in the Savitri Talaav nearby unearthed during digging. It is said that the idol was missing eyes but all the makeup and shringar.
  • There is a legend of Rukmini Shrine as well. The temple was built by Krishna himself. It is said the once a sage named Durvasa had gone to visit Krishna and his wife Rukmini. As they were on the way to meet him, Rukmini grew thirsty and wished to have some water. For this Krishna dug up a hole and made the river Ganga appear. On the occurrence of this event, Durvasa got very furious. He cursed Rukmini to stand where she was forevermore. Thus this is the place where the shrine stands today.

Shri Dwarikadhish Temple architecture

Limestone and sand have been used to build this temple. The temple is five stories tall. There are 72 pillars in all. All of them have been carved intricately.

The spire is 78.3 m high. The shikar on the top is 42 m high and a flag made of 52 yards of cloth is up there.

The flag has the symbols of a sun and a moon that symbolize the reign of Lord Krishna over the area for as long as the sun and the moon shall exist.

There are 2 main gates of the temple. One for the entrance and the other for exit. The entry gate has been named Swarg Dwar and the exit door is known as the Moksha dwar.

The Chief Minister of Uttrakhand had said that they will be issuing passes to the devotees. They shall have to register beforehand so that the numbers can be controlled and there is no chaos. It is the largest gathering in the world.

So there have to be many precautions to be taken in the tough Pandamic CORONA times. There may be colour coding of the ghats. This will symbolise the risk of covid on the Ghats. There will be designated routes and pilgrim rest houses.

The devotees will need to follow the assigned gates and resting places according to the passes that they shall receive.

Each person will be given a time slot of 15 minutes only, to control the crowd and allow maximum people to take a holy dip without overcrowding.

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) Yercaud – A 1000+ year old Cave temple at hill top

Servarayan temple, also called as Shevaroy temple is one of the most famous temples in the region and is a must visit temple if you are visiting Yercaud.

road leading to Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple)

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple)

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) location

Servarayan temple is located in cave on the top of the Shevaroy hills in the city of Yercaud near Salem in Tamil Nadu.

Yercuad is a small but beautiful hill station in Salem district and located in the Shevaroy hill range and this historical and beautiful temple is located at the highest point in yercuad at the altitude of 1623 meters or 5326 feet.

The top of the hill where this temple is located is a flat surface and looks like a plateau. Because of which at top of the hill apart from temple you will also find few shops and activities like horse riding ATV etc.

But the view from top is amazing. There is a view point from which you get to see the city. But my suggestion is to walk around and enjoy the view. The surface is flat and hence gives you a nice area to stroll around with family and friends and enjoy the natures beauty.

There are small shop where you can buy some thing to eat, water , juice etc. You will also find restrooms there. Ample parking space.

The best part of this trip is journey to the top. It is so amazing with lot of spots which offers you a panoramic view of the area.

The hill gives an amazing view of all other hills around and the town of Yercaud. From my perspective this is one of the best spots in Yercaud which you should visit.

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) History

Shevaroy Temple is a cave temple. This means that at the top of hill there is a cave in which this temple is located.

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple)
Main Temple – Outside view ( taken from side)

The cave has idol of Lord Servaryan and Goddess Kaveri. The Servarayan hills are named after the Lord and Goddess Kaveri represent the river Kaveri.

It is believed that Ma Kaveri is the guardian deity of the villages around this area.

It is also believed that the cave actually extends further deep behind the idol of Ma Kaveri and lord Servarayan. It is believed that river cauvery somewhere meets the cave further down. But of course you cannot go beyond the idols in the cave.

The cave itself is very narrow.

We spoke to the priest of the temple and came to to know that the temple itself is more than 1000 years old and lord Servarayan has been worshiped here from time immemorial .

All the villagers from around the area gather at the temple for a annual festival which is celebrated during the month of May.

There is a well near the temple. It is a old well and people say that it is a wishing well.

Activities for kids at Shevaroy Temple

As I mentioned before, the temple is at hill top, but the hill top is a flat surface and appears as a plateau.

Hence the view from top is just breathtaking. Also there are lots of activity for the kids.

There are some local games like

  • Baloon shooting – Rs 30/- for six chances
  • Horse riding – Rs 100 / round
  • ATV – Rs 100 / round
  • Other games like see saw etc

So there are activities which kids can definitely enjoy.

Best time to visit Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple)

Yercaud is a hill station and hence it is a nice place to visit year round. But being situated in southern plateau it does becomes a bit hot in summers. But still not that hot.

But if you ask me, the best time to visit Yercaud will be from September to March. Immediately after rains, this place look becomes worth a visit. Also since it is colder in these months, it is easy to walk around.

Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) timings

The temple is open through out the day. It closes by 6.30 PM. So you can plan to visit this temple anytime during the day. However early morning offers one of the best views around.

In case you want to enjoy kids activities, better to go there by 9.00 AM when the shops are open. Remember that photography is not allowed inside the temple.

How to reach Servarayan Temple

The temple is located at around 6 to 7 KMs from Yecaud bus stand. Once you are ay bus stand you will find a big marking towards Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple).

You will also cross Shri Raja Rajeshwari temple on the way. This is another beautiful temple on the way.

Then you will reach a junction where if you go straight, you will go towards Bangalore. So at this junction you need to take right. You keep on going straight you will reach this beautiful temple.

Over all Servarayan Temple (Shevaroy Temple) is a nice place to visit. The temple as I mentioned before is a very important temple of the region and is more than thousand years old. Apart from temple, the ride to the temple itself is very amazing and thrilling. And once you are at temple, you are at the top most place in Yercaud.

So friends, do visit this temple and this place when you are in Yercaud!

Have a nice darshan!

A sacred hill located at 50 kms from Bangalore, known as Ramadevara Betta has this ancient temple called as Lord Pattabhirama temple.

It is said that the idol of Lord Rama exists here from the times of Ramayan and the idol was installed here by no other than the monkey king – Sugreeva. Hence this place is called as Ramadevara Betta.

Ramadevara Betta Location ( Ramanagara Hills )

Ramadevara Betta means Ramadevara hill and the hill gets its name from Lord Rama and hence the village at the foot hills is known as Ramanagara.

But, Ramanagara is also famous for two other things. Ramanagara Hills is famous for

  • Ramanagara is known as silk city of India and this area id famous for silk production
  • And Ramanagara Hills – this place also got its fame due to the film Sholay. The village depicted in movie Sholay is at this foot hills and the movie’s scene were shot on these hills.

But let us more concentrate on the history of Ramadevara Betta ( Ramanagara Hills )

Legend of Lord Pattabhirama at Ramadevara Betta

There are 2 stories which talk about this place.

The end of Sukhasura

As per one of the stories, after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama, along with Ma Sita and Lakshmana, returned to Ayodhya.

A grand ceremony was held in Ayodhya after Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya.

Lord Rama was king of Ayodhya and a grand celebration took place. The monkey king sugreeva was also present there and saw Lord Rama sitting on the throne with Ma Sita on one side and Lord Hanuman and Lakshman standing on other side.

Sugreeva wished that he could capture this moment and worship lord Rama in king form throughout and hence he got the statue of his diety lord Ram carved in a stone with Ma Sita on the left hand side and Lakshman and Hanuman on the other side.

While taking this idol back to his Kingdom Kishkindha, when he reached this place, he was attacked by a demon named Sukhasura and a strong fight erupted between them. To fight the demon Sugreev had to keep the idol on the ground.

In the fight , Sukhsura was defeated, but after defeating Sukhasura when Sugreev tried to lift the idol, it did not move.

After some time a akashwani was heard ( accouncement from sky) that Lord Wished to be here. Hearing this Sugreeva installed the idol here and since then this place is called as Ramanagara and the hills is called as Ramadevara Betta and Lord Ram is called as Lord Pattabhirama.

End of Kakasura

As per another legend, during their exile, Lord Rama and Ma Sita visited this place and Lord Ram was resting, while Ma Sita was sitting next to him.

Lord Ram was in sleep when the king of crows name as Kakasura attacked Ma Sita. Not wanting to disturb Lord Rama, Ma Sita tolerated the pain. But a drop of her blood fell on Lord Rama.

This disturbed Lord Rama and he woke up. Seeing the wound of Ma Sita, he got very angry. He got some darbha grass and made a arrow out of it and shoot it on Kakasura.

Kakasura got scared and approached Lord Bramha and Lord Shiva for help. But they advised Kakasura to go back to Lord Rama and ask for his forgiveness as he only has the power to stop this arrow.

Kakasura then approached Lord Ram and asked for forgiveness. Lord Rama, forgave the crow, however he asked the crow to sacrifice a part of his body to the arrow to stop it.

Kakasura sacrificed his left eye and it is said that since then all the crows cannot see from left eye.

As per local legend from that time , no crow has been seen in this region.
