Pratyuangira Devi Temple

Pratyuangira Devi Temple , Bangalore

Pratyuangira Devi Temple is located in Bangalore’s Turahalli neighborhood, along Kanakapura Road. Beautiful architecture from the Pandyan dynasty, created in Agama shastra (one of the vedic styles).

There are many Pratyuangira Devi temples in Bangalore. The one in Turahalli is very famous and is visited by people across the city.

Pratyuangira Devi is the goddess who represents all 64 goddesses in Hindu mythology. She is a Hindu Goddess associated with Shakti, Hinduism’s immortal energy concept.

She is characterized as a deity having the face of a lioness and the body of a human. The balance of virtue and evil is represented by this lion-human hybrid.

Pratyangira is primarily envisioned as a protective, ferocious goddess capable of unleashing a torrent of fury and destruction in order to vanquish evil. She is regarded as a formidable protector against the effects of black magic.

Every Amavasya and Pornima, dry red Chiilis homas are held here.

Legend of Goddess Pratyuangira Devi

As per Markandeya Purana, at the start of the Satya yuga, the Lord Narasimha, an avatar of Vishnu, killed the demon King Hiranyakashipu by tearing up his body and drinking his blood.

Lord Narasimha was drunk on rage and could not be stopped because of the anger in Hiranyakashipu’s body and the malicious effects of human blood.

Lord Shiva appeared as Sarabeswara, a bird-animal-human hybrid, to soothe Lord Narasimha with the power of compassion. When Lord Narasimha saw this, he produced Gandaberunda, a two-headed bird who was Sarabeswara’s polar opposite.

When Sarabeshwara saw this, he transformed into Bhairava (Shiva’s ferocious form) and used his third eye to create the goddess Pratyuangira.

Devi Pratyuangira calmed down Lord Narasimha.

Pratyuangira appeared to be flying in the air. Her stature was strong, and she towered over the other gods and goddesses.

She had a thousand lion faces, 2,000 eyes, probably 2,000 hands with multiple weapons, and a thousand tongues, and her head was above the entire sky and her feet well into the down from afar.

Her creation is said to have come with thunder and lightning, and as soon as Narasimha Swami saw her massive figure, he grasped the significance of his duty and quickly left Ugra(roaring) Narsimha avataram for Shanta Narasimha.

Atharvana Bhadrakali – The other form of Goddess Pratyuangira Devi

Atharvana Bhadrakali is another name for Ma Pratyuangira.

For thousands of years, sages and Goddess worshippers have believed that she is the only Goddess capable of removing the effects of black magic and from possessed bodies and restoring them to a magnificent state.

Located on the top of a hill which is in between the city of Warangal and Hanamkonda, this is an ancient temple which was originally built during the Chalukyan reign in 625 AD.

The beautiful Bhadrakali lake is near the temple.

History of Bhadrakali Temple

According to the markings on the temple wall, the temple was built around 625 A.D. by King Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya dynasty to commemorate his victory over the Vengi district of Andhra Desham.

Ganapati deva also constructed a lake near the shrine. The temple lost its popularity after the Kakatiya kingdom fell to the Muslim rulers of Delhi.

By offering the diamond in exchange for not being invaded, the Kakatiyas secured a ceasefire with Allauddin Khilji. Malik Kufur, his slave and confidant, was dispatched to personally transport the gem.

Sri Ganesh Rao Sastri, a devi upasaka, and Gujrati businessman shri Maganlal rebuilt the temple in 1950. B.Sameja. Shri Bhadrakali Temple’s founder. In a dream, Bhadrakali Devi blessed Maganlal Sameja and wished for the renovation of the temple.

Natural rock formations around the temple add to the historical and theological significance of the temple, making it a must-see.

However, please note that photography is not allowed inside the shrine. Devotees can only take photos outside the main temple.

Architecture and History of Bhadrakali Temple

Bhadrakali temple is an old temple erected in the style of Chalukyan architecture to commemorate their conquest of the Vengi region.

The Ekanda Shila statue and the temple’s pillars depict Chalukyan reign, while the elaborate carvings on the pillars depict Kakatiya reign’s excellent craftsmanship.

Goddess Bhadrakali was also considered an ancestral deity by the Kakatiya Kings, who contributed to construct the temple further.

The Bhadrakali Lake was constructed during the reign of the Kakatiyas. During their reign, they built a lake-connected temple. With the fall of the Kakatiya dynasty, the importance of the Warangal Bhadrakali temple waned.

The main diety / goddess at this temple is Goddess Bhadrakali, who is depicted in a sitting pose. She is depicted with eight hands, each holding a weapon, and a crown. The idol is built of stone and stands at a height of 2.7 meters.

A fearsome lion, the Goddess’s sacred vehicle, stands opposite the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

There are numerous additional shrines within the temple. Separate temples for Lord Shiva, Hanuman temple, Subramanya Swamy, and Navagrahas, as well as images of Uma Maheshwara on stone, are located in Maha Mandapam.

These are said to be among the oldest carved stone idols of the gods. The Lord Vigneshwara Shrine, which is located outside the main temple, is a relatively new addition.

The temple’s deity is known as Goddess Bhadrakali, but the Goddess’s image is said to be turned into Tripura Sundari, a unique form that represents the universe’s highest feminine power, by the sacred mantras. Tripura Sundari literally translates as “beauty of the three worlds.” This condition, which includes Goddess Kali’s form, is considered the highest manifestation of Prakriti.

The Bhadrakali Lake, a man-made lake established during the Kakatiya period to serve as a supply of water for irrigation and other purposes, is a compelling element of this temple.

This 2-and-a-half-kilometer-long lake is flanked by hills and adorned with natural rock formations. It provides a serene backdrop that complements the Bhadrakali temple’s spiritual aura.

Although Bhadrakali temple is renovated to a large extent, ancient pillars near the Garbha Griha are symbolic of its great history.

Worship based on vedic rituals are performed every day at the temple by the temple priest.

The Thousand Pillar Temple in Warangal is shaped like a star and has 1,000 ornately carved pillars, reflecting the glory of the Chalukya monarchs.

Who built 1000 Pillar Temple ?

The temple, which was built in 1163 A.D. by King Rudra Deva in a typical Chalukyan style of architecture, consists of three concentric shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Surya.

Thousand pillar temple history

The temple was built during King Rudradeva’s reign in 1163 AD and is considered a masterpiece of Vishwakarma sthapathis of the Kakatiya empire.

The architectural style of the Thousand Pillar Temple is similar to that of Chalukyan temples. It is known as Sri Rudreshwara Swamy Temple and is said to be named after King Rudra Deva.

Thousand Pillar Temple Warangal Architecture

The Temple has been constructed at the base of the Hanamkonda hill.

As the name implies, there are a thousand finely carved pillars of all sizes and shapes. The main temple’s pillars are tightly intertwined and form the parapet.

Aside from the ornately carved pillars, the temple features delicate smokescreens, dazzling brickwork, and intricate and detailed sculptures that will captivate you.

Trikutalayam is the name given to the combination of the temple’s three shrines, which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Surya.

Shiva’s shrine is on the east side of the three shrines, while the others are on the south and west sides. The Kakatiyas wanted the early morning sun rays to fall squarely on Shiva Lingam because they were big worshippers of Lord Shiva.

Shiva’s sacred bull, Nandi, stands on the fourth side of the Temple. It was cut out of a monolithic black stone and is a stunning work of art.

The Thousand Pillar Temple’s Nandi faces east, as opposed to the majority of Nandis in Indian temples, which face west.

The ‘Natya Mandapam,’ which is enclosed inside these four corners, is where dancers perform. The pillars that support this temple’s deepest chamber are massive and made up of several stone blocks.

The Thousand Pillar Temple’s vast lawn is surrounded by several modest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Elephants carved into the rock on both sides of the temple entryway are magnificent symbols.

The Archaeological Survey of India is now maintaining the temple, which has been designated as one of India’s protected sites.

The Hadimba Devi Temple

The Hadimba Devi Temple, Manali – A temple from Mahabharata times

The Hadimba Devi Temple is a well-known Hindu shrine in Himachal Pradesh, dedicated to Bhima’s ( one of the Pandava’s ) wife.

Hadimba Devi Temple is also known as Hidimba Devi temple as she is called in our ancient texts.

Hadimba temple history

The temple was built by Maharaja Bahadur Singh in the year 1553.

From ancient times, it has been a cave temple and was dedicated to Hidimbi , who was sister of Hidimba. It is said that Hidimba did meditation here.

The Hadimba Devi Temple

Hidimba was born into a Rakshasa family, but Hidimba vowed to marry one who would defeat her brother Hidimb ( also called as Hidimba ). Hidimb was supposed to be very brave and fearless.

And hence you can say that the Hadimba Temple is associated with our great epic, the Mahabharata. The Hadimba Temple is built to pay homage to Devi Hadimba.

As per the legendary Indian epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas stayed in Himachal Pradesh during their exile.

During a fight between Hidimb and Bheem, Bheema defeated and killed Hidimb and hence Bhima and Hidimba’s sister, Hidimbi, then got married and had a son, Ghatotkacha.

When Bhima and his brothers returned from exile, Hidimbi did not accompany him, but stayed back and did tapasya (a combination of meditation, prayer, and penance).

She eventually attained the status of a goddess .

Construction of Hidimba Devi temple

This temple is constructed in pagoda style. The temple displays the finest example of wood carvings on it.

The Hadimba Temple’s roof, which is in the shape of a four-tiered pagoda, is a unique feature. The temple swaggers as well, thanks to its ornately carved wooden entryway.

Every year in May, a fair is held at Hadimba’s temple. During Dussehra, another fair is held. Hidimba Devi’s temple is centered around a cave where Hidimba practiced mediation.

Its sanctuary is erected over a rocky cleft covered by a big rock that is regarded as a manifestation of goddess Durga, and it also houses an image of the deity.

In the Hidimbi Devi Temple, there are intricately carved wood doors and a 24 meter tall wooden “shikhar.” Three square roofs covered in timber tiles and a fourth brass cone-shaped roof at the summit make up the tower.

The main door carvings depict the earth goddess Durga in many forms. The temple’s base was constructed utilizing whitewashed and mud-covered stonework. Because of its location, it is known as Dhungri Temple.

A shrine dedicated to Goddess Hidimba’s son, Ghatotkacha, who was born after she married Bhima, is located about 70 meters from the temple.

The most startling element of the temple, or what believers may call the most reassuring characteristic of the temple, is that the imprint of the Goddess’s feet etched on a block of stone is worshipped inside the temple.

Uthirakosamangai temple history

According to the legends, Mandodhari (wife of the Lanka Samrat Ravana) was very adamant that she would marry only a Shiva devotee.

And hence, she went to Lord Shiva and prayed to him. Lord Shiva ordered the sages at the ashram to take care of one of the veda writings (Agamas) and promised to deliver it to him when he returned. And he came to grace Mandodhari,

Lord Shiva then appeared before Mandodhari as a child. Ravana who came there touched the child as he knew that the child was Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva tested Ravana by changing himself into fire form. And because of this all the places around the world caught in this fire.

But the sages failed to protect the book and died. But, sage Manickavasagar courageously withstood the fire and saved the book.

Then Lord graced Mandodhari’s wish and Mandodhari married Ravana.

Lord Shiva changed sage Manickavasagar into Shiv Linga and it is said that the sage is still in this temple in the Linga form.

Also There is a 6 ft (1.8 m) tall maragatha Nataraja idol carved out of emerald inside the temple.

The temple has a seven-tiered rajagopuram. There are separate shrines for Mangalanathar in the form of linga. A hall of Saharasralinga has thousand linga enshrined in it.

The temple is considered very sacred along with Ramanathapuram, Sethu Madhava Theertham and Lakshmana Theertham.

The emerald image of Nataraja is anointed with sandal paste round the year except on Tiruvathidirai festival day when special worship is done.

It is believed that even small vibrations can damage the image and hence no percussion instruments are used during worship.

The front hall has linga made of spatika, that is anointed with cooked rice every afternoon.

There is another nice story associated with this temple.

As per Hindu legend, one upon a time, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma contested for superiority. Then Lord Shiva appeared as a flame, and challenged them to find his source.

Brahma took the form of a swan, and flew to the sky to see the top of the flame, while Vishnu became the boar Varaha, and tried to find its base.

Neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the source. Lord Vishnu conceded his defeat. But Lord Brahma lied with the help of a thazhamboo (a flower) and said he had found the pinnacle.

As a punishment, Shiva ordained that there will not be any temple on earth dedicated to Lord Bhramha and that all Shiva temples will not use thazhamboo for worship.

But this is one temple, where thazhamboo is allowed for worship . Manickavasagar, the 9th century Tamil saivite saint poet and nayanar has revered Mangalanathar and the temple in his verses in Tevaram, compiled as the fifth Tirumurai.

Arunagirinatha, a 15th-century Tamil poet has composed Tamil hymns which glorifies Subramanya in the temple.

As per Hindu legend, Subramanya was awarded the Airavata (white elephant) of celestial deity Indra at this place.

Uthiram means – upadesam (teaching) and Kosam means rahasiyam (secret) and mangai means Ma Parvathi.

It is the place where Lord Shiva taught the secrets of veda to Parvathi and it is the place where Lord shiva gave dharshan to saint Sri Manikavasagar.

It is believed that Goddess Parvathi is worshipping Lord Shiva here. This temple is mentioned in 38 places in Thiruvasagam , the famous Shiva hymn.

After obtaining this unparalleled boon, Ravana requested Lord Shiva to accompany him to Lanka . Shiva agreed to Ravana’s request and transformed himself into Shivling.

Lord Shiva instructed him to carry the Shivling and warned him not to set it down on the ground on his journey. Ravana began his journey towards Lanka and arrived in Baijnath, where he felt compelled to respond to nature’s call.

When Ravana saw a shepherd, he handed over the Shivling to him and went away to relieve himself.

When the shepherd discovered the Shivling was quite heavy, he placed it on the ground, and the Shivling became settled there, taking the form of Ardhnarishwar (God in form of Half Male & Half Female).

Manu Temple Manali

This location has a special historical heritage that appeals to the majority of visitors to Manali.

Manu was a sage who is well-known for his wisdom. After redeeming mankind from the great flood, Manu is thought to be the first king to rule the earth. The Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu forewarned him of the impending flood and instructed him to build a massive boat. Let us look at the legend of Manu Temple and event which led to ManuSmriti.

Manu temple history

So below is the legend associated behind the story behind the Manu Temple Manali.

As the legend in Matsya Purana, Lord Vishnu’s Matsya Avatar initially appeared as a small fish when King Manu was washing his hands in the river.

The small fish requested the king Manu to save him. Honoring the request from this small fish, King Manu placed it in a water jar.

Soon the fish grew big and was too big to fit into the jar and King Manu shifted it into a bigger bowl.

But the fish kept growing bigger and bigger, and King Manu had to shift it from the bowl to a well and then into a reservoir.

The fish kept growing bigger and bigger, King Manu had to shift the fish back into the river.

Very soon even the river seemed insufficient for the fish as it had grown to gigantic proportions and King Manu had to shift the fish into the ocean.

That is when the huge fish transformed into Lord Vishnu and informed King Manu of an all-destructive deluge that will soon flood the entire world.

King Manu built a boat big enough to house his family, 9 kinds of seeds and animals and birds to repopulate the earth once the deluge was over.

It is believed that post the deluge, King Manu stepped on the earth and meditated at the very spot where Manu Temple is situated. King Manu later on came to be known as Sage Manu who is also ascribed to the Manusmriti (Laws of Manu).

Who wrote Manusmriti

So have you wondered – who wrote manusmriti ?

The Manusmiriti text presents itself as a converse given by the Sage Manu to an assembly of Rishis who beseeched him to guide them in how to face natural calamities and establish peace and discipline in the society.

Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother, was struck by an arrow from Meghnaad, Ravana’s son, and lost his senses during the battle.

Despite repeated attempts, he could not be cured. Then a vaidya told Lord Rama that the only way to save Lakshmana was to bring Sanjeevani plant from the Himalayas.

This life-saving responsibility of bringing the Sanjeevni Buti from Himalayas was assigned to Lord Hanuman.

On his way to the Himalayas to collect the herb, Lord Hanuman encountered sage Yaaku sitting in penance on Jakhu mountain .

Lord Hanuman stopped on the mountain in order to learn more about the herb. The mount was unable to support the Lord’s weight and sank to the ground, shrinking to half its previous size.

Anyway Lord Hanuman got all the information needed about the herb and started this journey towards the Sanjeevani parvat, promising sage Yaaku that he would meet him on the way back.

However, Lord Hanuman encountered a deadly monster named Kaalnemi on his return journey.

Lord Hanuman had to fight with with this demon. This took a long time, so he travelled directly to Lanka, while the sage waited for Him.

Hanuman didn’t want to make the sage unhappy. . So he went before the sage and explained why he had broken his promise.

After pacifying Yaaku, Hanuman vanished, and an idol of lord himself appeared on the hill by itself.

Yaaku constructed a temple on the hill to commemorate the Lord’s presence and preserved the idol there. The idol, as well as the footprints of the monkey god, may still be seen in the temple today.

Sugreeva venkateshwara temple, Bangalore – An ancient and unknown temple of Bangalore

You must have heard of Sugreeva, the monkey king from Ramayana. But do you know that there is a temple dedicated to him in namma Bengaluru? I am talking about Sugreeva venkateshwara temple !

What is unique about Sugreeva venkateshwara temple

This temple is dedicated to one of the very important character of Ramayana, that is Monkey king Sugreeva. And hence this temple holds a great religious importance.

Sugreeva venkateshwara temple, Bangalore

As per legend Sugreeva and is army of monkeys assisted Lord Rama during the Lanka war where Lord Rama defeated and killed the demon king Ravana.

But the temple is very unique in the sense that one it is dedicated to Sugreeva as I said before, but also it has idols of both Sugreeva and Lord Venkateshwara ( Lord Vishnu ).

In this temple, there are 2 idols with idol of Sugreeva with folded hands. This idol faces the idol of Lord Venkateshwara.

A cursory glance would lead one to believe that the idol is that of Lord Hanuman, but a closer examination reveals that there are two fangs protruding from the mouth, which is the main difference between this idol and Lord Hanuman’s idol.

The inner shrine, which is located on the Balepet main road, houses a lovely deity of Lord Venkateshwara on a pedestal.

Sugreeva’s six-foot-tall idol bears a striking resemblance to Hanuman. The only thing that distinguishes it from Hanuman are the large fangs on either side of the mouth.

In two distinct temples built for them, Lord Venkateshwara and Sugreeva face each other.

Lord Venkateshwara is consecrated in the temple facing the smaller door and this also I find very unique.

According to the local legends, the Sugreeva’s statue was submerged in the Kempambudhi tank, and one of the devotees had a dream telling him to raise it from the water and install it in the temple.

According to locals, Kempegowda-I got this temple constructed for the Uppara community.

khatu shyam mandir Sikar – The story of Shri khatu shyam ji dating back to Mahabharate times

Khatu shyam mandir Rajasthan : Khatu Shyam Ji Mandir is one of the most prominent pilgrim destinations in Rajasthan.

Located in the district of Sikar it is visited by thousands of devotees each year. Today I bring to you this beautiful story of Shri Khatu Shyam Ji.

Who is Shri Khatu Shyam Ji

According to hindu mythology the story of Shri Khatu Shyam Ji dates back to Mahabharata times. It is said that Shri Khatu Shyam ji is the incarnation of Ghatotkacha’s son, Barbarika.

If done with sincere piety, devotees who pronounce his name from the bottom of their hearts are supposed to be blessed and have their troubles eradicated.

The legend of Shri Khatu Shyam ji

The story of Shri Khatu Shyam ji dates back to Mahabharata times.

As per legend during the Mahabharata period (about five and a half thousand years ago ) there was a great warrior and a noble soul whose name was Barbarik .

He was grandson of Bheema ( One of the Pandava brothers ) . By doing satvik and selfless penance of the Navadurgas in the secret area located at Mahisagar Sangam, Barbarik obtained divine power and three arrows and bows.

During the war of Mahabharata, Barbarik decided to go to war and help Kauravaas. He was bound by his principle to help the weaker side in any war.

So he took the blessings of his mother and left for the battlefield. His intention was to help whoever loses in the war.

When Lord Krishna came to know about this story, he thought that in such a situation the war would never end. Therefore, disguised as a Brahmin, he stopped the way of Barbarika and asked him he was going.

Barbarik told Lord Krishna about Kurukshetra. Shri Krishna in the form of a Brahmin asked him to show his skill.

Barbarika pierced all the leaves of the tree with a single arrow except the one that Shri Krishna had buried under his feet. Barbarik prayed to Shri Krishna that he should remove his foot from the top of the leaf or your foot may get injured.

Shri Krishna withdrew his leg and asked for a boon from Barbarik.

Barbarik agreed to that. Shri Krishna in the form of Brahmin asked for head donation. Hearing this, Barbarik did not get upset at all, but requested Shri Krishna to give darshan in his real form because no ordinary person can ask for this donation.

Then Shri Krishna appeared in his real form.

Lord Krishna was extremely happy with the devotion shown to him, and by the great sacrifice of Barbarika that he granted him a boon, according to which Barbarika would be known by Krishna’s own name, Shyam Ji and in the kaliyuga would be worshipped in his own form.

After a long time, during Kali Yuga, the appeared miraculously in Khatu. It is said that while going home, a cow used to stand at one place on the way and shed streams of milk from all four udders.

When the cowherd saw this scene, he narrated the whole story to the king . Lord Shyam ji then appeared in the dream and asked him to dig the place where milk comes out from the udder of the cow.

He found the Shaligram Shilaroop Deity there and established it as per vedic rituals.

Significance of bathing in the Shyam Kund in the temple

Near the temple is a holy pond called the Shyam Kund. It is said that this is the point from where the head of Khatu Shyam Ji was retrieved.

A popular belief among devotees is that a dip in this pond can cure a person from their ailments and bring them good health.

With devotional fervour, people taking ritual dips in the pond are not an uncommon sight. It is also believed that bathing at the Shyam Kund during the Phalguna Mela Festival, which is held every year, is especially salutary

Varadaraja Perumal Temple History

The temple history dates back to Mahabharata times ( which was in Dwapar Yuga).

The legend is that the Pandavas lost their kingdom to Duryodhan in the game of gambling and as per the terms set during the game, they were supposed to spent their time in exile. Most of us are quite aware of this incident of Mahabharata.

It is said that during their exile they wandered at many places and also came to shoolgiri. It is said that when they were here, Arjuna established this temple and worshipped Lord Vishnu.

This temple is called as ‘Dakshina Vaikuntam Hasthashyla Sree Kshethram’ (Vaikunatam of the South).

Here Lord Vishnu is know as Sri Varadaraja Perumal.

What is unique about Varadaraja Perumal Temple?

Being associated to Mahabharat times, this itself makes this temple a must visit, but few more important points to note is that

  • Lord faces west in this temple
  • Goddess Mahalakshmi faces east in a separate sanctum
  • During Utharanyana period (mid jan to mid july), the sunrays falls on the feet of Lord Varadaraja Perumal during sunset.

How to reach Varadaraja Perumal Temple Shoolgiri

The route is pretty straight forward.

  • Bangalore = > Hosur => Shoolgiri
  • Just 1.2 kms from National Highway 48
  • Take the service road at the next left after crossing shoolgiri board
  • Food options – lots on the way.

Please note that once you enter the village, the road is called as dam road, after around 1 kms , you will see a small road going in. The google map will ask you to turn right. But since there is no concrete road, we tend to get confused and miss that. If you miss this turn, then google will re-roue to another 2 kms. So please keep a note of this.

Alternatively you can take a bus from Bangalore or Hosur to reach Shoolgiri and then take an auto.

Overall , this is a temple worth visiting.

We were thrilled to visit a temple which is said to be associated to the great Arjuna and Pandavas.

However I was sad to see that the temple is not well maintained.

The approach to the temple is narrow and during festivals or special occasions parking can be an issue.

This is avery famous Vishnu temple as I mentioned before temple is also called as ‘Dakshina Vaikuntam.”

There are 2 more temples near by. Called as Kashi Vishwanath temple and Ayyappa Swamy temple.

You can also visit these temple during your visit.

As per local legend , Lord Rama subdued  bhagwan Parshuram at this place of Hiremaglur.

Brief History of Konark Sun Temple

The construction of this magnificent temple was ordered by Narsimha deva 1, one of the rulers from the eastern Ganga dynasty.

It was built to commemorate his victory over Tughral Tughan Khan in the 1255 CE. It is believed that there were magnets on top of the temple which used to interfere with the magnetic compasses of the sailors.

This used to lead to shipwrecks. The wheels built in the temple are actually sundials that tell time accurately to date.

The temple was commonly known as the black pagoda due to its colour. The temple we see today is just the entrance of the original temple, the rest is believed to have fallen with time.

There had been the destruction of the temple at the time of invasion by the Muslim invader Kala Pahad in the year 1568.

The architecture of the sun temple

The basic design of the temple is in the traditional Kalinga style. The temple is in the shape of a large chariot of the sun god.

There are 12 beautifully engraved pillars and 7 horses. The temple is east slanted so that the first rays of the morning sun shines right upon the main entrance. On the entrance, there are two huge lion structures that seem to be crushing a man and an elephant.

Monsters, animals, beasts, and warriors have been carved out on the walls. There is a similarity of the structures and carvings with those of the Khajuraho temple.

The main sanctum was 70 meters tall, but it fell in the year 1837 due to the weak soil. There is a surviving structure of a 30-meter-high hall.

The temple was originally right on the seashore but there is a considerable distance from the sea now as the sea has changed course.

There are a few more temples in the complex. They are believed to be the Navagraha temple, one of Lord Vishnu and another for the wife of Sun God.

Legend Behind Konark Sun temple

Why Sun God is not worshipped in the Konark temple?

There is a legend according to which when the temple was about to be completed the ruler had ordered a deadline to finish it. Failing which all the 1200 workers would have been beheaded.

The whole structure was ready but there was difficulty in installing the main idol due to the placement of magnets.

Dhramapada the son of the ruler came forward and solved the problem. But the ruler would kill the workers now as well if he came to know that the small boy was able to solve the problem while all the artisans were struggling for a solution.

So, he killed himself to save the lives of all the 1200 workers. But this death made the whole temple impure.

As a result, no worship is done. A myth also says that the young boy was an avatar of Lord Sun to destroy the big ego of the King which he had grown for the construction of this temple.

The followers of Hinduism wish to visit the temple at least once in their life. It is counted among the pious Char Dham Yatra pilgrims.

Shri Rameshwaram temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. The architecture is mesmerizing. It has one of the most famous Jyotirlinga temples of India.

The corridors are the longest in the world known for a temple. The carvings on the pillars are not seen anywhere else in the whole world.

The Lingam is believed to have been placed there by Lord Rama. But the temple has been renovated by several different rulers, so there is an amalgamation of different cultures in the design.

Shri Rameshwaram temple history:

It has a very interesting story associated with the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple . A belief says that once Lord Rama had killed Ravana he was returning back to Ayodhya with Ma Sita.

But he was overtaken by guilt. He wanted to remove the guilt or the Dosha of having killed so many brahmins. So, the sages with him advised him to install and worship a shiva lingam.

He is the one who can forgive their sins. He wished for the largest lingam to be brought from the Himalayas. This was done by hanuman. But all this took a lot of time. So, in the meanwhile, Ma Sita made a small Shiva lingam out of the sand.

The lingam brought by Hanuman was the bigger one. It was placed beside the smaller one. The larger one is called Shiva lingam while the shorter one is called Rama lingam.

The original temple was just a shed made of straw. But later rulers of the Setupati dynasty built massive structures around the main shrine.

The world-famous corridors were the idea of Muthuramalinga. It is called the Chokkatan Mandapam. Architecture is so special that students from all over the world come to study design.

The intricate carving on the pillars is so profound. It is a beautiful and magical sight. The placement of these pillars is such that you can see the corners of the corridor can be seen from any end. The pillars have been placed with precision.

The architecture of the Rameshwaram temple:

The temple is very famous for its architecture all over the world. like all the other south Indian temples it also has high boundary walls and great main gate structures.

The area is so large that it covers 865 feet east to west and 675 feet from north to south. The famous corridors run on a five feet high platform.

The corridors are built using sandstone pillars and ceilings. The total area covered by the corridors is 3850 feet, it is known to be the longest in the whole world. there are 1212 pillars in the outer corridor only.

Rameshwaram temple Rajagopuram

The prominent tower in the center is called the Rajagopuram, it stands 53 meters high. The main halls have been given different names like Sukravara Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam, Anuppu Mandapam, Setupati Mandapam, and Nandi mandapam.

There are two lingams in the temple, unlike any other temple. The first one is a smaller one believed to have been built by Ma Sita herself.

The second one is the larger one brought by Hanuman from Kailash. There are also 22 holy water tirthas in the temple, these are small water bodies.

The devotees take a bath in the water from all of these to get rid of their sins. Interestingly the water from all of these has a different taste. The main one is called Agni Teertham.
