Who started the Kumbh Mela?

In the 18th century, a Maratha ruler known as Ranoji Shinde began this holy festival. It was a local festival in the beginning.

He had invited Ascetics from Nashik to Ujjain. It was celebrated to enhance the Hindu religion and unite all the religious people in one place so that they could meet and understand each other better.

Why is Kumbh Mela celebrated?

The Kumbh Mela is a spiritual event. It is a mesmerizing experience. It is the largest religious gathering in the world.

This is a place where Hindu men and women come together for the holy dip in the river Ganga and also discuss about their faith in the religion.

There are prayers all day and night. The atmosphere is so divine. One is enriched spiritually by merely being present at the venue. There is so much to learn and understand at the Kumbh Mela.

What is the legend behind Kumbh Mela?

Kumbh is derived from the word pot or pitcher. It is related to the pot of Amrit in this case. This is a pot of nectar that can make a man immortal and remove all his sins.

This was the elixir of life. On Samudra Manthan, there was some spillage of this nectar. It is believed to have fallen here in Haridwar as well.

So a dip in the holy river at this auspicious time is believed to remove all the sins and make your soul pure.

Which god is worshipped in the Kumbh Mela?

During the Samudra Manthan, the first thing to come out was poison. It was all drunk by Lord Shiva to save all the creatures of this world.

He is known as Neel Kanth for this reason. So if Lord Shiva would not have finished the pot of poison there would have not been any pot of elixir.

Each and every akhara worships Lord Shiva though some do worship Lord Vishnu as well.

The first Kumbh Mela was held in which year?

The first Kumbh Mela was celebrated in the year 1870 at Allahabad. Though it was scheduled to be held in the year 1958 due to the uprising disturbances, no Mela was held.

What is the meaning of the word Kumbh?

There are various meanings of this word. But in the Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist context it means pot or womb. It is known to represent the life, fertility, and sustenance or purity of humans.

Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021 restrictions due to COVID

So Will there be any restrictions due to the current COVID situation?

Yes in the current situation there are restrictions bound to be in place. Though Kumbh is a Mela where one and all are allowed to attend, this year it will be different.

As in the past years, there have been a huge number of devotees thronging the place at the same time. The government has come up with the idea of limiting the devotees each day.

The Chief Minister of Uttrakhand had said that they will be issuing passes to the devotees. They shall have to register beforehand so that the numbers can be controlled and there is no chaos. It is the largest gathering in the world.

So there have to be many precautions to be taken in the tough Pandamic CORONA times. There may be colour coding of the ghats. This will symbolise the risk of covid on the Ghats. There will be designated routes and pilgrim rest houses.

The devotees will need to follow the assigned gates and resting places according to the passes that they shall receive.

Each person will be given a time slot of 15 minutes only, to control the crowd and allow maximum people to take a holy dip without overcrowding.

There shall be a special focus on the cleanliness of the area. There will be a special garbage disposal technique and the area will be kept as clean as possible so that there is a minimum spread of the disease.

Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021 Guidelines to be followed?

The central and state government have made preregistration mandatory. All those who wish to visit the Kumbh Mela will need to register.

They will also need to furnish a medical certificate. The registration has to be done with the Uttrakhand government.

The medical certificate has to be obtained from a local community health center or a government medical hospital.

Those devotees coming from abroad will need to take extra precautions. The government is trying to give the vaccine to as many people as possible before the Kumbh Mela, especially those on duty during the Mela.

According to the legend, long time ago a lady named Charumath lived in the Maratha kingdom. She was a very pious lady.

She took good care of her family , respected her in-laws, loving and cared for her husband and children. One day she dreamt about Goddess Lakshmi asking her to perform the pooja. She, with the consent of her family, performed this Vrata. She also told about this to other ladies.

She was blessed by Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, and with this Vrat, it is said that one can find peace and prosperity in life.
