Hanuman Mandir Connaught Place Delhi – A temple from Mahabharata times

Although the whole of India is the center of faith and devotion, but there are some places here for which there is great reverence in the minds of the people. One such place is the ancient Hanuman temple in Delhi known as Hanuman Mandir Connaught.

This temple has Swayambhu (self appeared) murti of lord hanuman in childhood form seeing south also known as `Dakshin Mukhi Hanumanji`.

Hanuman Mandir Connaught Place history

It is said that during the Mahabharata period, the Pandavas established five temples in Delhi. This ancient Hanuman temple is one of those five temples.

The other four temples include Kali Mandir-‘Kalkaji‘ in South Delhi, Yogmaya Temple near Qutub Minar, Bhairo Temple near Purana Qila and Neeli Chhatri Mahadev Temple at Nigam Bodh Ghat.

Actually the ancient name of Delhi is Indraprastha. During the Mahabharata period, the Pandavas established this city on the banks of the Yamuna river.

Then the Pandavas ruled Indraprastha and the Kauravas ruled Hastinapur. It is believed that both Bhima and Hanuman, the second brother of the Pandavas, were brothers, hence both are called Vayu-putras.

Because of this attachment to Hanuman, the Pandavas established this Hanuman temple in Delhi. All the five temples have great importance.

The present form of this Hanuman temple came in front of the devotees in the year 1924 when Maharaja Jai Singh of the then princely state of Jaipur got it renovated.

After this its popularity spread all over the world and Bajrang Bali started showering his blessings on everyone. The mahant of the temple tells that one can have divine darshan of the child form of Hanuman ji here.

Here 33 generation of same family have been continuously taking care of Hanuman ji’s temple and serving Bajrang Bali. Hanuman ji had special blessings on all of them.

Legend of Hanuman Temple CP

According to a belief, the famous Bhakti saint Tulsidas ji had come here during his visit to Delhi and had darshan of the wonderful child form of Bajrang Bali and was quite mesmerized.

It is said that he composed the Hanuman Chalisa while sitting here. Meanwhile, when this news reached Mughal emperor Akbar, he sent an order to Tulsidas ji to come to the court. Tulsidas reached here after getting orders.

Then the Mughal emperor urged him to show some miracle and also gifted moon and crown urn for the Hanuman temple at Connaught Place.

This temple also gives the message of equality of all religions because devotees of every religion reach here. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is located near the temple, while on the other side there are mosques and churches. A priest of the temple told that there is a special tradition of offering chola here on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Devotees use ghee, vermilion, silver work and perfume bottle in Chola offerings.

A special feature of this temple is that here after about 90 years, Hanuman ji leaves his body and comes in his ancient form. The biggest feature is that there is unbroken mantra chanting here round the clock.

This series has been going on continuously since August 1, 1964. This chant is of Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram. It is said that this is the longest chant in the world. This is the reason why it is also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.

There is also a famous Shani temple near this Hanuman temple. This is also a very ancient temple. This Shani temple was built by a South Indian devotee.

Devotees reach this temple from far and wide. Four dates in a year are very important for Hanuman temple, Diwali, Hanuman Jayanti, Janmashtami and Shivratri. On these dates the temple is decorated like a bride and Hanuman ji is specially decorated.

US President Barack Obama is also a devotee of this temple. He had visited Bajrangbali during his visit to India. Overall, this temple is very miraculous and fulfills every wish of the devotees. This is the reason why the doors of the temple remain open round the clock and devotees keep coming.
