The relation of Baba Khatu Shyam is believed to be from the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Panduputra Bhima. There is a legend that impressed by the immense power and potential of Khatu Shyam, Shri Krishna gave him a boon to be worshiped in his name in Kali Yuga.

खाटू श्याम वाले चलो रे चलो रे चलो बाबा के -2
श्री कृष्ण चन्द्र समझावे,
जो कोई साँचे मन से ध्यावे
उसका सब दुखड़ा मिट जावे,
चालो बाबा के ।। टेक ।।
बाबा भोत घणो दातार,
पल में भर देवे भंडार,
याको नाम है लखदातार,
चालो बाबा के ।। टेक ।।
पहल्या शाम कुंड में नहावा,
फिर बाबा के मंदिर आवा
आपा नाच नाच के गावां,
चालो बाबा के ।। टेक।।
जो भी श्याम बाग में जावे,
उसकी बुद्धि हरी हो जावे
मन को भंवर मगन हो जावे
चालो बाबा के ।। टेक ।।
हंसो हंसा में मिल जावे-2,
थारो “सोहनलाल” गुण गावे
थारो नाम अमर हो जावे, चालो बाबा के ।।
