Vidurashwatha Temple is another beautiful temple located near Bangalore.
Naga Devatha temple at Vidurashwatha as the name suggests is dedicated to Naga Devata. People here install Naga Silas to ward off Naga Doshas.
It is also called as the Vidurashwatha temple and is also famous for 2 other things – one the Vidur tree which is a tree planted by Vidur from Mahabharat times and other the incident which also gave this place a name as Jallianwala Bagh of South
So this place is quite interesting and if you are in bangalore, this place and this temple can be one of the interesting places to visit.
So this place has a place has its own importance in mythology as well as modern history.
Where is Vidurashwatha Temple gauribidanur
This temple is actually situated in a small village called as Vidurashwatha and is in Gauribidanur taluk and as I have mentioned before relates to an event in Mahabharta. It’s 6Kms from Gauribidanur city.
Gauribidanur taluk is in Chikkabalapura district of Karnataka and is quite near to Bangalore International airport. So this place is accessible via Chikkabalapura or you can also go via doddabalapura.
Vidurashwatha temple history
So what is the legend of the Vidurashwatha temple and how is it related to modern history as well.
How Vidurashwatha Temple is related to Mahabharata
According to a legend during the period of Mahabharata, an Ashwatha (also called as fig) tree was planted by Vidura.
Hence the name Vidurashwatha. It’s said that the tree fell in 2001. But you still see that root and big stem part of the tree.
But even if you see the remaining part of the tree, you are seeing something which is 3000 years old or may be older than that. Isnt that amazing?
So how did Vidur Ji came here ?
Vidur Ji came here because he was advised by Lord Krishna to go on a pilgrimage as he was remorseful after seeing bloodshed during the war between Kaurva and Pandava.
After visiting many places, Vidura came to this place, which was actually a hermitage of Maithreya Maharishi.
Vidur Ji stayed at this place and also planted this fig tree.
And hence this place is called as Vidurashwatha and this tree became known as the Vidura Tree.
Why Vidurashwatha is called Jallianwala Bagh of South
And as I have mentioned before, this place also finds a special mention in modern Indian history. This place is also called as Jallianwala Bagh of South.
This place is also known as the Jallianwala Bagh of south India because a similar incident of smaller scale took place here.
On April 25, 1938, as a part of the freedom struggle of India, a group of villagers had gathered here to organize a Satyagraha.
Similar to what happened at Jallianwala Bagh, police fired indiscriminately at this group, resulting in the death of many people.
A memorial has been erected in this location bearing the names of those who lost their lives in this incident.
How to reach Vidurashwatha Temple Gauribidanur:
This place is approximately 90 Kms from Bangalore city center.
There are 2 ways to reach Vidurashwatha from Bangalore.
You will like this copper Naga devta
1) Via doddabalapur : Bangalore – Yelahanka New Town -> Doddabalapur -> Gauribidanur -> Vidurashwatha.
2)Via Chikkabalapur : Bangalore -> Devanhalli -> Chikkabalapur -> Gauribidanur -> Vidurashwatha.
The place is not very crowded. It is advisable to carry some food and options are very limited on the way. Specifically if you are going via Doddabalapur.
The road conditions are very good. There is a toll just before Marasandra on Doddabalapur road and the road is 4 lane road all the way.

On the way, one you reach near Gauribidnur, you will find people selling fresh Gauva which is very tasty. You should for sure try one.
