If done with sincere piety, devotees who pronounce his name from the bottom of their hearts are supposed to be blessed and have their troubles eradicated.
The legend of Shri Khatu Shyam ji
The story of Shri Khatu Shyam ji dates back to Mahabharata times.
As per legend during the Mahabharata period (about five and a half thousand years ago ) there was a great warrior and a noble soul whose name was Barbarik .
He was grandson of Bheema ( One of the Pandava brothers ) . By doing satvik and selfless penance of the Navadurgas in the secret area located at Mahisagar Sangam, Barbarik obtained divine power and three arrows and bows.
During the war of Mahabharata, Barbarik decided to go to war and help Kauravaas. He was bound by his principle to help the weaker side in any war.
So he took the blessings of his mother and left for the battlefield. His intention was to help whoever loses in the war.
When Lord Krishna came to know about this story, he thought that in such a situation the war would never end. Therefore, disguised as a Brahmin, he stopped the way of Barbarika and asked him he was going.
Barbarik told Lord Krishna about Kurukshetra. Shri Krishna in the form of a Brahmin asked him to show his skill.
Barbarika pierced all the leaves of the tree with a single arrow except the one that Shri Krishna had buried under his feet. Barbarik prayed to Shri Krishna that he should remove his foot from the top of the leaf or your foot may get injured.
Shri Krishna withdrew his leg and asked for a boon from Barbarik.
Barbarik agreed to that. Shri Krishna in the form of Brahmin asked for head donation. Hearing this, Barbarik did not get upset at all, but requested Shri Krishna to give darshan in his real form because no ordinary person can ask for this donation.
Then Shri Krishna appeared in his real form.
Lord Krishna was extremely happy with the devotion shown to him, and by the great sacrifice of Barbarika that he granted him a boon, according to which Barbarika would be known by Krishna’s own name, Shyam Ji and in the kaliyuga would be worshipped in his own form.
After a long time, during Kali Yuga, the appeared miraculously in Khatu. It is said that while going home, a cow used to stand at one place on the way and shed streams of milk from all four udders.
When the cowherd saw this scene, he narrated the whole story to the king . Lord Shyam ji then appeared in the dream and asked him to dig the place where milk comes out from the udder of the cow.
He found the Shaligram Shilaroop Deity there and established it as per vedic rituals.
Significance of bathing in the Shyam Kund in the temple
Near the temple is a holy pond called the Shyam Kund. It is said that this is the point from where the head of Khatu Shyam Ji was retrieved.
