According to mythology, Lord Shiva reportedly instructed their sons, Lord Kartik and Lord Ganesha, that whoever comes first after taking a complete circuit of the cosmos would enjoy the luxury of worshipping first.

Kartik began his trek, but Lord Ganesha demonstrates his intelligence by circling Lord Shiva and declaring that the entire universe is in him.

Lord Shiva, impressed by Ganesha’s wisdom, granted him the honour of being worshipped first. Lord Kartik became enraged and surrendered his flesh to his mother Parvati and his bones to his father Lord Shiva.

The idol in this shrine depicts Lord Kartikeya’s bones.
