The temple is associated with a renowned mythical story of Lord Rama and Ravana’s deadly battle in Lanka – Shri Ramayana!
Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother, was struck by an arrow from Meghnaad, Ravana’s son, and lost his senses during the battle.
Despite repeated attempts, he could not be cured. Then a vaidya told Lord Rama that the only way to save Lakshmana was to bring Sanjeevani plant from the Himalayas.
This life-saving responsibility of bringing the Sanjeevni Buti from Himalayas was assigned to Lord Hanuman.
On his way to the Himalayas to collect the herb, Lord Hanuman encountered sage Yaaku sitting in penance on Jakhu mountain .
Lord Hanuman stopped on the mountain in order to learn more about the herb. The mount was unable to support the Lord’s weight and sank to the ground, shrinking to half its previous size.
Anyway Lord Hanuman got all the information needed about the herb and started this journey towards the Sanjeevani parvat, promising sage Yaaku that he would meet him on the way back.
However, Lord Hanuman encountered a deadly monster named Kaalnemi on his return journey.
Lord Hanuman had to fight with with this demon. This took a long time, so he travelled directly to Lanka, while the sage waited for Him.
Hanuman didn’t want to make the sage unhappy. . So he went before the sage and explained why he had broken his promise.
