Why is Kumbh Mela celebrated?
The Kumbh Mela is a spiritual event. It is a mesmerizing experience. It is the largest religious gathering in the world.
This is a place where Hindu men and women come together for the holy dip in the river Ganga and also discuss about their faith in the religion.

What is the legend behind Kumbh Mela?
Kumbh is derived from the word pot or pitcher. It is related to the pot of Amrit in this case. This is a pot of nectar that can make a man immortal and remove all his sins.
This was the elixir of life. On Samudra Manthan, there was some spillage of this nectar. It is believed to have fallen here in Haridwar as well.
So a dip in the holy river at this auspicious time is believed to remove all the sins and make your soul pure.
Which god is worshipped in the Kumbh Mela?
During the Samudra Manthan, the first thing to come out was poison. It was all drunk by Lord Shiva to save all the creatures of this world.
He is known as Neel Kanth for this reason. So if Lord Shiva would not have finished the pot of poison there would have not been any pot of elixir.
Each and every akhara worships Lord Shiva though some do worship Lord Vishnu as well.
The first Kumbh Mela was held in which year?
The first Kumbh Mela was celebrated in the year 1870 at Allahabad. Though it was scheduled to be held in the year 1958 due to the uprising disturbances, no Mela was held.
What is the meaning of the word Kumbh?
There are various meanings of this word. But in the Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist context it means pot or womb. It is known to represent the life, fertility, and sustenance or purity of humans.
