Sugreeva venkateshwara temple, Bangalore

As per legend Sugreeva and is army of monkeys assisted Lord Rama during the Lanka war where Lord Rama defeated and killed the demon king Ravana.

But the temple is very unique in the sense that one it is dedicated to Sugreeva as I said before, but also it has idols of both Sugreeva and Lord Venkateshwara ( Lord Vishnu ).

In this temple, there are 2 idols with idol of Sugreeva with folded hands. This idol faces the idol of Lord Venkateshwara.

A cursory glance would lead one to believe that the idol is that of Lord Hanuman, but a closer examination reveals that there are two fangs protruding from the mouth, which is the main difference between this idol and Lord Hanuman’s idol.

The inner shrine, which is located on the Balepet main road, houses a lovely deity of Lord Venkateshwara on a pedestal.

Sugreeva’s six-foot-tall idol bears a striking resemblance to Hanuman. The only thing that distinguishes it from Hanuman are the large fangs on either side of the mouth.

In two distinct temples built for them, Lord Venkateshwara and Sugreeva face each other.

Lord Venkateshwara is consecrated in the temple facing the smaller door and this also I find very unique.

According to the local legends, the Sugreeva’s statue was submerged in the Kempambudhi tank, and one of the devotees had a dream telling him to raise it from the water and install it in the temple.

According to locals, Kempegowda-I got this temple constructed for the Uppara community.
