ISKCON Temple Kanpur – General Overview

ISKCON Temple Kanpur (ISKCON Temple Kanpur) is an international spiritual tourist attraction dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The temple is located on Mainavati Marg of Bithoor Road, about 4 km from Kanpur.

The best time to visit is in August and September as Krishna Janmashtami and Radhashtami fall in this month.

This is a very beautiful temple. There are idols of Lord Krishna as well as many other deities here.

The impressive marble structure of the temple is truly grand and inspiring. You can spend half your day here comfortably , touring the temple complex, visiting the bookstore of the temple, meditating within the peaceful aura and worshiping Krishna and Radha.

If possible, visit ISKCON Kanpur at 7:30 pm when there is a grand aarti.

How to reach ISKCON Temple Kanpur?

The temple is located on Mainavati Marg, Bithoor which is 4 km from Kanpur. This distance can be covered using tempos, buses and private taxis.

Let me tell you that you can go for the share tempo, the price is as follows:

  • Gurudev to Ghantaghar – INR 12
  • Gurudev to Mainavati Marg – INR 5

If traveling by train, get down at Kanpur Central Railway Station and take a tempo to Jain International School, Mainavati Marg. And the temple can be reached on foot from the school. The temple is about 700 meters.

The distance from the railway station is 15 km and it will take 30 minutes, if you want to go directly by taxi or auto . The estimated fare is Rs 200.

If you want to go by bus, the buses stop at Jhakkarkatti Bus Stop and it is easy to catch an auto from the stop to Jain International School, Mainavati Marg.

Festivals Celebrated at ISKCON Temple Kanpur

Janmashtami

Shri Krishna Janmashtami marks the birthday of Lord Krishna. The date of Janmashtami varies according to the date in the Hindu calendar, but it usually occurs in August.

The entire temple is whitewashed and cleaned before this occasion and Janmashtami is the most crowded.

The idols are bathed with aromatic oils and other essentials like turmeric powder, milk, ghee, saffron, curd and fresh fruit juices.

They are then dressed in new clothes and ornaments and offered Chhappan Bhog (a form of multi-ingredient plate) as prasad or sacred offering.

Radhashtami

The birth of Radharani ji is celebrated in September with different dates according to the Hindu calendar.

On this day, the entire temple is decorated with garlands and flowers, a grand bathing ritual is performed in the name of the goddess.

The idol of Radharani is further served with the traditional thali or bhog which is made in the temple itself.

Let me tell you that:

  • ISKCON temple also has its own cowshed. Here these cows representing the earth as per the Vedas are served and worshipped.
  • The milk of these cows is used as prasad to the devotees. It is also used to wash the idols during the process of abhishekam or abhishekam.
  • There is a built-in Govinda restaurant which serves thali (Indian dish thali) and other vegetarian dishes.
  • Various bhajans, kirtans, courses and festivals are organized by the temple as a form of discourse to spread the divinity of Lord Krishna.
