Why rice is not eaten on this day?

According to the scriptures, fasting on Ekadashi is done with the aim of controlling the senses so that the mind can be kept pure and concentrated.

Mythology of Ekdashi

There is a legend that while running away from the anger of Ma Shakti, Maharishi Medha left his body with the power of yoga and merged into the earth.

It is said later that Maharishi Medha took birth on earth in the form of rice and barley. It is believed that this incident happened on Ekadashi. Barley and rice are considered to be the medha power of Maharishi, who is a living being.

This is the reason why barley and rice have been considered as living beings.

Even today, barley and rice do not even require soil to grow. They germinate only by sprinkling water. Considering them as living beings, they have been refrained from taking Ekadashi as food, so that the fast of Vishnu Swaroop can be completed sattvic.
