Nandi , also known as Nandikeshwara or Nandideva is the vahana of the Lord Shiva. He is also the guardian deity of Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Almost all Shiva temples display stone-images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine.

The word тАЬNandiтАЭ is derived from the ancient Indian Language of Sanskrit. The Sanskrit word тАШNandiтАЩ in English translates as Happy or Joyous .

Another theory is the word Nandi is derived from Tamil word тАЬnanduтАЭ meaning bull. In ancient Tamil culture bull is a sign of masculinity and valour.

The white color of the bull symbolizes purity and justice. Symbolically, the seated Nandi faces the sanctum in Shiva temples and represents an individual soul and the message that the person should always be focused on the Lord.

Nandi is a popular deity in all of the Lord Shiva temples.

From the Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple in Bangalore to the Mahanandiswara temple at Kurnool, there are many famous temples in India depicting the loyal and faithful Nandi.

The latter temple, in fact, has the highest Nandi statue in the world and is one of the few temples dedicated solely to Nandi. People living in Bangalore, know about the bull temple which is quite famous.

But, today I take you to a beutiful Nandi temple at the outskirts of Bengaluru.. called as Bayalu Basava Temple complex ..

Located on Chandapura Dommsandra Road , around 2Kms from Muthunallur Cross, Bayalu Basava Temple is said to be a very old temple..

The temple premises is grand and is said to one of the few grand Nandi temples in the region. The Nandi idol here is said to be swaybhu . The temple is renovated, but the orginal Nandi temple is said to be an ancient one. Not much history is available.

But speaking to the Purohit we found that the temple has special powers and Nandi statue is special. There is a fair which happens once in a year and attracts lot of devotees from villages around.
